Hip Moscow - The Multimedia Art Museum

The Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow is a Russian state museum dedicated to the presentation and development of actual art related to new multimedia technologies. The museum opened just last October (2010) on the grounds of the old Moscow House of Photography. The museum is located on one of Moscow’s oldest streets, Ostozhenka, where the wealthy lived in the 16th-century era of Ivan the Terrible.

The museum was established in 1996, however in 2001 the name was changed from the Moscow House of Photography to the Multimedia Complex of Actual Arts. In 2005 the building housing the museum went under construction, and after a 5-year renovation period, the museum opened at the end of last year as the Multimedia Art Museum.

The museum displays both the Russian and international art, with the new building featuring five floors of expansive halls in the “white cube” format, classic Russian photography and endless exhibition spaces.

Recent exhibitions included a series of photographs by Sergei Shestakov documenting what Chernobyl looks like 25 years after the disaster. Also a photographic journey through the life of Mick Jagger has just been taken down.

Currently running till July 10th is a variety of contemporary works from the Castello di Rivoli, a castle that’s home to contemporary art in Turin, Italy. And, along with many other exhibitions, there’s a nice collection of Russian 3-D postcards from the ’70s.

If you're interesting in multimedia art, and something new and different than the traditional museums in Moscow, check out The Multimedia Art Museum!
