Fast Food in Russia

Fast Food spreads into the Russian culture!

American fast food has been exported abroad for years. China and India continue to be big expansion markets, but lately, the industry is finding a growing desire for its fare in Russia, including pizza, burgers, cinnimon rolls, and subway sandwiches.

For years McDonald's, which opened its first restaurant on Pushkin Square in 1990, was the only American fast food chain in Russia. Now McDonalds operates 279 restaurants in Russia, and continuing to grow.

With McDonald's success, other chains are flocking to the Russian market. Burger Kind has opened 22 restaurants, mostly in mall food courts, within two years. Carls Jr. has 17 restaurants in St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. Wendy's, the newest comer, has opened two restaurants including a flagship on Arbat Street in Moscow, and plans to open 180 by 2020.

McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's comprise the three largest fast food chains in the world, but others are coming too. The subway sandwich chain has opened about 200 stores throughout Russia through several franchisees. Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, operates a co-branded chicken restaurant chain called Rostik's-KFC, and Il Patio an Italian food chain in Russia. Yum now has around 350 restaurants in Russia. Papa John's also has a big presence in Russia, with 25 stores and many more planned. Another famous american coffee shop, Starbucks, has 47 outlets in Russia.

The culture of fast food is growing more and more in Russia, as people have more disposable income, infrastructure in cities continues to develop with the opening of large malls with food courts that are popular places for fast food chains.

Check out some authentic Russian food while you're visiting, but when you feel the need for a pizza or burger, remember you have options.
