Halloween in Russia
Halloween has made it's way to Russia!
Halloween is not a traditional holiday in Russia, in fact many people think that it shouldn't be celebrated at all, and the Orthodox Church in particular is against it. However, as Halloween is popular and the west, the new Russia has absorbed the holiday and now it is commonly celebrated among young people in Russia.
On a recent trip to Moscow I found myself sitting inside a big shopping mall and almost forgot that I was in Russia and not back home in the states. I was sitting in the food court eating Wendy's, since it was the most recent to open in Russia, but my choices were between McDonalds, Burger King, PIzza Hut, Sparro, and Subway. To add to the effect, the inside of the mall was decorated with a typical American Halloween/Fall theme. There were spider webs hanging from the cieling, with ghosts and pumkins everywhere, just as you would find in an American mall this time of year!
Halloween is celebrate much like it is in the west. The only difference is that small children don't go around their neighborhood trick-or-treating as those in the west do. Otherwise celebrations are much the same, such as bars and clubs hosting Halloween parties with contests for best costume and such. It is also common to have house parties on halloween where everyone gets dressed up and even have pumpkin carving contests, although the traditional round orange pumpkins that we use are a bit harder to find!
Enjoy Halloween wherever you are!
