The Pushkin Memorial Museum
The museum is situated in one of the oldest and most beautiful streets of Moscow Arbat. Earlier, in the XIX century that region of the capital used to be an ristocratic one. It was right there, in house 53, where Pushkin ented a flat on the eve of his wedding. This flat is the poet s only Moscow remaining flat. He managed to spend here only some months. And in May, 1831 the poet moved to St. Petersburg. The exposition of the museum varies from oil and water-colored portraits, rare engravings and lithographs to delicate furniture, original books and magazines of Pushkin s epoch.
The museum is one of the largest literary museums n Russia. Its collection is considered uniques. In the Moscow museum is kept material connected with the life and work of Pushkn, along with the history of literary and and Pushkin studies: numerous portraits, paintings, views of cities, and historical and book illustrations, theatrical ‘Pushkiniana’, decorative arts, books, manuscripts, films and photos.
The collection of the museum is continually being expanded with valuable artistic creations. Today the collection included close to 200 000 pieces. Of those 68 000 were donated. In the book collection there are over 90 000 pieces.
The musuem is well known both in Russia and well outside of the country. Many foreign exhibitions are shown here, and every year the museum has 300 000 visitors. The museum’s employees give lectures, excursions, and organise major events, among them literary and musical evenings, concerts, celebrations for children and adults, Pushkin readings, and scientific conferences.
The museum also has an active publishing programme. In recent years they have relseased more than 20 books, illustrated albums, exhibition catalogues, and material from conferences and symposia. The scientific activites of the musuem’s employees has been recognised by specialists and by all of those interested in the life and work of the poet. Doctors of Philosophy, Ph.D. candidates, and honoured worked of the Russian federation work are among the museum’s employees.
In 2007 the museum turned 50. In that time much has been achieved, but much work also lies ahead of it.
